Brian Epstein, who managed The Beatles from 1962 until his death in 1967, was honored Sunday in London with a Blue Plaque, a historical marker linking notable figures of the past to the buildings where they lived and worked. London's Royal Society of Arts began erecting the memorial tablets in 1867, attaching the earliest to the birthplace ofLord Byron.
The Epstein plaque was placed on Sutherland House in Argyll Street in London's West End next to the London Palladium, the theater where crowd frenzy over a Beatles live TV show in 1963 inspired the term Beatlemania. Epstein's company, NEMS Enterprises, occupied the fifth floor of the building from 1964 until he died in 1967 at age 32. At Sunday's commemoration, messages from admirers were read, including accolades from Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr and George Martin. Pattie Boyd, Yoko Ono, Andrew Loog Oldham and others also paid tribute. More than 500 attended the tribute, produced by David Stark, founder and editor of SongLink. Among those on hand were musicians Adam Ant and Dave Berry, Quarrymen co-founder Rod Davis, Epstein associates Geoffrey Ellis and Tony Bramwell, Mersey Beat magazine publisher Bill Harry and Beatles biographer Mark Lewishon.
