It's full speed ahead as LEGO launches their surreal and fantastical Yellow Submarine set
ake a surreal trip under the seas in the LEGO® version of the Yellow Submarine (#21306). A collectible replica of the underwater vessel from The Beatles inspired musical fantasy film, the LEGO Yellow Submarine takes fans on a journey to Pepperland with the Fab Four!
The submarine features a removable top for easy play, a cockpit that accommodates the included John, Paul, George and Ringo cartoon minifigures, two rotating propellers, four periscopes, an adjustable rudder, plus assorted accessory elements that The Beatles have collected on their journey. The set also includes a Jeremy figure – on board to help the musicians defeat the Meanies. An ideal gift for fans of LEGO building and The Beatles, it’s great for role-play or to create a colourful retro display.
Created by fan-designer Kevin Szeto and selected by LEGO Ideas members, the set measures over 5” (13cm) high, 9” (25cm) long and 2” (6cm) wide. At £49.99 RRP, the set includes over 550 pieces, is suitable for ages 10+ and contains a collectible booklet about the LEGO fan designer and the Yellow Submarine.
“As an amateur musician and songwriter, I have always been drawn to the music of The Beatles. The creation of the Yellow Submarine model was really my way of showing my affection for The Beatles, as well as trying to pay a small tribute to The Beatles phenomenon. The Yellow Submarine is bright, fun, and colourful, which also made it a good subject to translate into LEGO form”, Kevin said as he shared his motivations for building the Yellow Submarine.
Justin Ramsden’s (LEGO designer) motivations were also very much centred around his love for the iconic band, as he was given the opportunity to refine Kevin’s initial model. “I watched the film when I was younger and was really inspired by how it oozed so much imagination – comparable to how I view LEGO elements. I’m also a massive fan of The Beatles having grown up with their music all my life so to see The Beatles in LEGO form is a dream come true.”
LEGO Ideas is a crowdsourcing community where LEGO fans can submit their own ideas for new LEGO products, and vote for other members’ ideas. Members collect votes for their ideas online, and ideas that receive 10,000 votes have a chance of being selected to become part of the LEGO Group’s product portfolio. To date, 15 products have been released via the platform, with three of these launched in 2016 alone.
